5 Outfit Ideas to Impress at Your Next Listing Appointment

author: katy peer real estate tips Jan 25, 2023

In real estate, everything speaks. From your communication style, to your timeliness, to your clothing choices, you need clients and potential clients to buy into you as a person. Would you hire someone to sell your home who showed up to an appointment in athleisure? Didn’t think so.

That means even when it’s raining or hot and humid, you should always opt for business casual or even business formal attire. It can be helpful to read the clients and even glance through their social media to get a feel for what dress code they would be most comfortable with. Your geographic location will also play a role. While some beachside towns may lean casual, bigger cities may expect you to be dressier. In a lot of cases, you might not need to wear a suit to look professional.

We’re sharing some great alternatives that are perfect for mixing and matching depending on the season and client. Dressing to impress can get tiresome, and it’s hard to stay current without spending big on a wardrobe. Here are some of our favorite affordable pieces that you can use again and again.

The Classic Cardigan

The cardigan is back in fashion, which is good news for Realtors. A simple cardigan over a camisole or button down is a refined look that is also affordable and easy to style. We are loving some of the more vibrant, royal colors like greens and blues that are showing up this season. It’s a great way to add some personality to your look without looking unprofessional.

The Cropped Pant

As an agent, you’re constantly on the move, and ideally, that doesn’t mean destroying the bottoms of your pants in the process. We opt for a cropped work pant because it makes it easy to maneuver through your busy schedule, while keeping your look sharp and refined every step of the way (literally).

These days cropped work pants come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. There’s the wide legged look, the flare, and the skinny. If we find a fit we like, we prefer to snatch it up in a few colors. A basic black or navy, and a bright pink or green to mix in on occasion.

The Workhorse Dress

Every year, it’s worth stocking up on a handful of workhorse dresses. They are low maintenance and easy to throw on at a moment’s notice to look professional for impromptu meeting. The good news is that you don’t need to spend big for it to look like you did.

Make sure to check Target regularly to find gems like these. They are constantly dropping new options and selling out, too. Old Navy also has some great options like this one which works for a cool spring day or in winter with boots and a coat.

If you’ve got the budget, you can opt to spend a little more on a timeless piece like this that will last you years.

The Heeled Mule

You might feel like wearing heels is one of the necessary evils of the business, but the healed mule might be the reprieve you need. This style is not only fashionable, but is comfortable too.

A classic pair like this one can complement almost any look you put together. Depending on your comfort level, you can go for a higher heel (these are beautiful in white). We’d pick up a pair in leather and suede. In the right situation, you could even pull off a flat mule for a comfortable alternative.

The Button Down

The button down should be a staple in any Realtor’s closet. It’s easy to pair with any of the pants we listed above, or with a skirt as the weather warms up. The button down is comfortable and it never goes out of style. What’s not to love?

For spring or summer, a gauzy fabric is breezy yet crisp. And all year round, a cotton or silk button down will look just right. This one and this one are all time favorites of ours. Here's a whimsical patterned button down for a bolder look. And this year, we’re buying up these striped button downs for spring.
